This is almost worth reading just for the art.
I’ve been a longtime fan of Gaiman, but only cursorily read his Sandman comics. But like he says in the intro – you’ve got to start somewhere.
The story is like poetry. With a beauty you can see, even if you don’t completely understand what is going on. I’m sure I would have had a better time figuring things out if I’d read all the Sandman back issues. But are doesn’t necessarily need an explanation.
And the…drawings? Illustrations? Paintings? Gorgeous.
As I said, even if you didn’t want to read this book, it’s worth looking at each page for the beautiful art between its covers. I especially loved the different versions of Sandman, as well as the intelligent species throughout time and space. Such imagination. And an imagination amazingly put to paper.
Of course, in the back are interviews with all the artists and the requisite variant covers.
Recommended for Sandman fans. Or, check it out, even if you aren’t. You might see what you’re missing.
Thanks to NetGalley and DC Comics for a copy in return for an honest review.
